Nose Surgery

Reshaping of the nose, also known as nose surgery or rhinoplasty, may be done for a number of reasons including improving the appearance of the nose, improving nasal breathing, or restoring shape after a destructive process such as nasal tumors or trauma.

Cosmetic reasons for rhinoplasty include changing the size of the nose, changing the angle, reshaping the tip, and narrowing the nostrils. Straightening the nasal bridge can also be achieved through this procedure. Overall, nose surgery can enhance one’s facial features and improve their profile.

Aesthetic nasal surgery is just as much art as it is science. As an artist, the perfect nose is one that has balance and symmetry with the rest of the face so as to not take attention away from one’s eyes. As a scientist, the nose has multiple unique functions that must be preserved for surgery to be considered successful.

The length of the procedure, approach, and recovery is dependent on several factors and varies from patient to patient. The surgery is complex and should be performed by someone who has specialized in improving aesthetics while maintaining or even improving function. Additional procedures, such as chin augmentation, may be performed simultaneously to further enhance your result.

Your Initial Consultation

An initial consultation will be necessary before a date can be set for your rhinoplasty. When discussing rhinoplasty, communication between the surgeon and the patient is essential. This helps the surgeon to understand the patient’s needs.

As part of every rhinoplasty consultation, Dr. Rodriguez will review your goals and expectations, making you feel more informed and at ease with your decision. He will evaluate the structure of your nose and your face, and the two of you will go over your complete medical history. Based on the information gathered during the consultation, a surgical plan is created.

The Rhinoplasty Procedure

Before the procedure, the patient has to stop taking any blood-thinning medications. Smokers need to stop smoking a few weeks before the procedure since smoking negatively affects skin health.

Nose surgery is generally done as an outpatient procedure, and the patient can return home the same day. The procedure is usually done under local anesthesia with sedation. Depending on the patient’s health and other factors, sometimes general anesthesia may be used instead.

Dr. Rodriguez will make an incision either at the base of the nose or within the nostrils. The bone, cartilage, and soft tissue will be adjusted to improve the nose. Once the procedure is completed, a splint may be fixed on the nose to help the nose retain the new shape it has acquired.

Nose Surgery Recovery

Dr. Rodriguez’s instructions need to be followed closely to ensure a quick recovery. Medication and follow-up visits will be needed. Care should be exercised while eating, wearing eyeglasses, and pulling clothing over the head. Recovery usually takes a week. The full results can be seen once all swelling is gone and healing is complete.

Nose Surgery Cost

It may be possible for one’s health insurance to pay for the entire cost of the rhinoplasty procedure or a part of it, provided it is being performed for functional reasons. When nose surgery is performed for purely aesthetic reasons, its price is not covered by health insurance.
